Equality for Women in Events Business

Interesting story from C&IT Magazine – click here to see ‘Equality for Women in Events’

Couldn’t agree more. My team core are all women at the moment. Not that men can’t and aren’t great event managers, it just seems that the industry has a strong proportion of women event planners. But getting them to lead great event businesses in the future is the key to real equality.

A level playing field is what is needed and people to inspire young event planners to want to take the top jobs. Mentors and role models at senior positions in successful event companies are needed and a clear career path for young people entering the industry will help, but it isn’t easy. The industry will need to also recognise that women may career break to have a family, so consider job share & part time working, and flexibility with late night event work.  Don’t think of this as a something you are forced to do or that it ‘isn’t how we work’.  Want to do it.  It will keep people with you longer and maximise on their creative input to your business.  It also doesn’t have to be forever.  Many women need this kind of flexible support for a few years when children are small, but then are happy to return to a full time working pattern.  Change and flexibility isn’t always easy – but nothing worth having is!

In return for this approach: determination, passion, creativity, good time management and sheer hard work is what the individual can and should deliver. A flexible working day shouldn’t mean less commitment or sense of responsibility to your work.  The opposite.  Part time and job share working requires the event planner to be more organised than ever – so ladies – rise to the challenge!

If it helps any young female event planners out there – I started my company on £200 from the kitchen table, brought up two daughters and we now work with leading UK celebrities and businesses and turn over £3M a year……it can be done.
