How to Build Emotional Value into Luxury Events

TLC’s CEO and founder, Liz Taylor, shares her thoughts on how to build emotional value into luxury events, and explains why she feels this is what sets her events apart in this discerning and demanding market. Additionally, Liz provides tips on how to cultivate that emotional connection during the event planning process.

“While I’ve always enjoyed the ‘window dressing’ stage of organising an event, the final polish, the intricate details – chandeliers, signature cocktails, jaw-dropping floral displays – there’s something deeper about the luxury events we organise at TLC that truly sets them apart.”

Emotional value.

For me, an understanding and connection, to guest, to client, to our team, is what makes our events unforgettable.

It can be small moments like a personal note from a father to a bride, hidden and revealed just at the right moment. A toast that hits all the right notes. An emotive performance. Or something more monumental – the gasp of the crowd as a hidden dance floor is revealed. At a corporate event, a founder’s story of grit and industry is told first-hand or through symbolism and visual storytelling.

As a luxury event planner, I’ve learnt through the years that emotions are our most important currency. Those moments that bring feelings to the surface are what linger in the hearts and minds of our guests. They are what stays with them long after the room is cleared. And they’re what makes clients certain that the event was worth the investment.

HOW TO BUILD EMOTIONAL VALUE INTO LUXURY EVENTS

Here’s how to build that emotional depth into every event you create.

FIND THE PURPOSE

Before you dive into themes, colour palettes, or menus, it’s important to get clear on the purpose of the event.

Is the main aim to inspire, to unite, transform or celebrate? What feelings do you wish to evoke? Nostalgia, joy, excitement. All of the above? Are guests engaged and enthused about the event? Do you need to change perceptions or underline their perspective? What is the emotional goal?

Once you have this information clear in your mind, it can act as your compass, informing every design and logistical choice.

What’s the final feeling?

Ask yourself (and your clients): What do we want people to feel when they leave?

Work backwards from that feeling in every creative and strategic decision.

MAKE IT PROFOUNDLY PERSONAL

Personal stories equal powerful moments. In luxury events, personalisation is the norm, but this can be elevated through emotional storytelling.

Get under the skin of your client. What makes them tick? What makes them unique? What’s their origin story or defining factor? For private events, what makes the person shine? What are the family stories told time and again? What’s their favourite colour, TV show, popstar? You need to know more about them than even they do!

Once you have a definitive view, bring that to life through each and every element of your event. The history and heritage of a brand can be told through a variety of mediums. Anything can be used as a vessel to underpin your narrative. From what the cocktails are served in, to the invites, menus, staging, and table centres. Create visual timelines or memory walls for private or corporate clients. A fabulous example of this is in our TLC event portfolio. Cocktails served from vintage suitcases! A homage to a successful jewellery brand that originated from a founder selling out of a suitcase.

BRING IN MULIT-SENSORY DESIGN

To truly forge an emotional connection, you need to appeal to all of the senses. How many times has a piece of music transported you to another time and place? Or the waft of a fragrance pulled a hidden memory into sharp focus.

Emotional connection is deeply sensory. The scent of jasmine, the sound of a cello, the warmth of candlelight. Design your event with all five senses in mind and help to bring your client’s memories alive.

Curate soft, thoughtful lighting or dramatic visual moments depending on the theme and style of your event. Remember, light can transition; it doesn’t have to stay fixed throughout the party. Colour, mood, focus, and overall effect can act as a conductor to the emotions you’re attempting to evoke.

Bring in live music, build playlists that take guests on an emotional journey. Enlist speakers who can rouse, rally, or reflect on a touching moment in time.

Envelope your venue with signature fragrances. Take guests on a scent-scaped journey using floral notes or custom-scented candles.

ENCOURAGE CONNECTION

The most powerful events don’t just entertain; they bring people closer together. Within your event schedule, build in time for people to connect. Walk the space and find the natural gathering places, then allow time for guests to just be. Ensure the seating plan and table arrangements are sociable and encourage mingling. Introduce conversation starters and quiet corners for meaningful interactions.

Many corporate clients ask us to create interactive opportunities. It can be as simple as a gaming area with retro games to encourage ‘play time’ before the serious conference work begins. Or interactive cocktail stations where management and team leaders create bespoke drinks to the personal palate of their teams.

IN SUMMARY

Emotional value is the soul of any luxury event. It’s what turns an event that’s beautiful on the surface into one that’s truly unforgettable. It transforms a polished production into a deeply personal experience. By designing with purpose and introducing multi-sensory and personalised moments, we can create memories that resonate long after the final toast.
