Insurance is built on relationships. So why are so many insurance events still built around name badges, drinks receptions and hoping people will mingle? There. We said it.
In an industry where trust, reputation and personal relationships matter enormously, bringing people together should be one of the most powerful things a business can do. But only if you give people a reason to be there.
At Taylor Lynn Corporation, we’ve spent almost 40 years creating events that bring people together. And whatever the sector, one thing hasn’t changed: people remember how an event made them feel long after they’ve forgotten what was on the menu.
So, if you’re planning an insurance event, perhaps it’s time to play things a little less safe.
Start with the ‘why’
Before you book a venue, choose the entertainment or start discussing menus, ask one question: Why are we bringing these people together?
Is it to strengthen client relationships? Reward your team? Celebrate success? Introduce people who could benefit from knowing one another? Build culture? Win new business?
The answer should shape everything that follows. Because “we always hold one in October” isn’t really a brief.
Stop calling everything networking
Networking matters enormously in insurance. But putting 200 people in a room together doesn’t automatically mean they’ll connect. The best networking rarely feels like networking.
Think about how guests arrive. Who introduces them? Where will they naturally gather? Is there somewhere to have a proper conversation? What can you create that gives strangers an immediate shared talking point?
Good event design can change behaviour. And sometimes the most valuable part of an event isn’t what’s happening on stage. It’s the conversation happening beside it.
Give people something to talk about
Your guests have probably been to a lot of corporate events.
Another drinks reception? Lovely.
Another three-course dinner? Perfectly pleasant.
But will they remember it next week? We believe the strongest insurance events need an idea at their heart.
That doesn’t mean spending wildly or filling a room with gimmicks. It means creating something with enough personality to feel different. It might be an unexpected location. Brilliant entertainment. An immersive theme. A fabulous food experience. Or simply turning a traditional format on its head.
More expensive doesn’t automatically mean more memorable.Better ideas do.
Hospitality matters
Luxury in events isn’t about adding more. It’s about making people feel looked after.
A warm welcome. Effortless service. Excellent food. Somewhere comfortable to talk. A drink appearing at exactly the right moment. A team that notices what’s needed before the guest has to ask.
Those details might not make the Instagram reel. But they make the event.
And for businesses built on relationships and trust, that matters.
Remember your own personality
Perhaps most importantly, your event should feel like your business.
There isn’t an “insurance event look”. At least, there shouldn’t be. A challenger brand shouldn’t host the same event as an established global insurer. A people-led broker shouldn’t suddenly become formal because somebody decided that’s what corporate hospitality looks like.
Know your audience. Know your brand. Then create something that brings the two together.
Ready to play a little less safe?
Insurance will always be a relationship business. Events give you the chance to turn those relationships into real conversations, shared experiences and memories.
So don’t simply get people into a room. Give them a reason to be glad they came.
